Heirloom Hand-Painted Bovine Bone Mahjong Set
Some Mahjong sets are manufactured.
This one is made slowly, by hand, one tile at a time.
Crafted from carefully selected bovine bone and individually hand-painted with figures inspired by Chinese heroes, legends, and traditional imagery, this Mahjong set represents a living family craft passed down through generations.
From selecting and joining the bone to shaping, polishing, and painting every individual tile, each set requires approximately 20 days of dedicated handwork.
Because the process cannot be rushed, fewer than 30 sets can be completed each year.
The result is not simply a Mahjong set.
It is an heirloom made to be played, kept, and passed on.
An Heirloom, Made by Hand
Each set begins with the material itself.
Suitable bovine bone is carefully selected before every tile is individually joined, shaped, and polished by hand.
The craftspeople continue working each surface until the joins are nearly invisible and the tile develops its characteristic smooth, substantial finish.
Only then does the painting begin.
Traditional figures, characters, and suit details are applied one tile at a time, transforming the natural bone into a complete Mahjong set filled with color and storytelling.
No two sets are exactly alike.
Made by Our Grandparents
This is not an industrial production line.
The tiles are made by experienced family artisans using techniques preserved through generations.
They select the bone.
They join and shape each tile.
They polish every surface.
And finally, they paint every figure by hand.
Small variations in brushwork, line, color, grain, and tone are not defects—they are traces of the person who made the set.
What takes twenty days to make is meant to last for generations.
Approximately 20 Days to Make One Set
Time is one of the most important materials in this collection.
A complete set takes approximately 20 days to produce.
The bone must be selected carefully.
The individual components must be fitted and shaped.
Every surface must be polished.
Every illustrated figure must then be painted by hand.
There is no meaningful shortcut without changing the character of the finished set.
Time cannot be rushed. Neither can craftsmanship.
Fewer Than 30 Sets Made Each Year
Because of the amount of handwork involved, production is intentionally limited.
Fewer than 30 sets can be made each year.
This limited output is not created artificially for exclusivity—it is simply the natural result of a slow, handmade process.
Suitable material is limited, and every stage depends on experienced hands rather than automated production.
For collectors, this means each completed set belongs to a very small annual production.
Hand-Painted Chinese Heroes & Legends
The illustrated tiles carry scenes and characters inspired by traditional Chinese heroes, legends, and cultural imagery.
Rather than relying on standardized printed graphics, the artwork is applied by hand.
Individual figures are painted in vivid reds, blues, greens, yellows, and blacks, creating expressive miniature scenes across the tile faces.
Even within the same suit, subtle differences in line and color reveal the handmade nature of the work.
Each tile becomes its own miniature painting.
All-Bone Construction
The tiles feature an all-bone construction, giving the set a naturally substantial feel.
Individual pieces are joined using traditional fitting methods, then carefully shaped and polished by hand until the joins become nearly invisible.
Unlike perfectly uniform synthetic materials, natural bone carries its own character.
Subtle differences in grain, tone, texture, and coloration may appear throughout the set.
These natural variations are part of what makes every set unique.
Natural Material, Individual Character
Bovine bone is a natural material.
For that reason, slight tonal variation, natural grain, tiny marks, and differences in surface character may appear from tile to tile.
These characteristics should not be expected to look identical to molded acrylic or resin.
Instead, they reflect the individuality of the original material and the handmade process used to transform it.
Over time, the set develops the character of an object that has been handled, played, and lived with.
Tile Size
-
Individual Tile: 1.46” H × 1.02” W × 0.63” D
-
Metric Size: 37 × 26 × 16 mm
The generous size and natural density give the tiles a substantial presence in the hand.
Complete Set Weight
-
Approximate Complete Set Weight: 6–9 kg
The significant weight comes from the natural density and substantial construction of the bone tiles.
This is a remarkably solid Mahjong set designed to feel very different from lightweight modern plastic or acrylic alternatives.

Custom Orders
Custom orders are available for quantities of 5 sets or more.
Because every set requires extensive preparation and handwork, please contact us at least one month in advance for larger custom orders.
Material availability and the final production schedule must be confirmed before an order can be accepted.
Handmade production means lead times may vary depending on material selection and the complexity of the requested order.
Why Every Set Is Different
No two handmade sets will ever be perfectly identical.
Differences may appear in:
-
Natural bone grain
-
Ivory tone and coloration
-
Hand-painted figures
-
Brushstroke placement
-
Color intensity
-
Tile surface and polish
-
Join visibility
-
Minor dimensional details
These variations are part of the authenticity of the craft rather than manufacturing imperfections.
Painted one tile at a time. No two sets are exactly alike.
Care Instructions
Natural bone should be treated differently from modern acrylic Mahjong tiles.
Keep the tiles dry and gently wipe them with a clean, soft cloth after use.
Avoid soaking the tiles in water or exposing them to alcohol, bleach, abrasive cleaners, or strong chemical cleaning products.
Store the set in a cool, dry environment away from prolonged direct sunlight, excessive heat, and high humidity.
Because the illustrations are hand-painted and the material is natural, gentle handling will help preserve the surface and artwork for years to come.
Product Notes
This is a handmade product crafted from natural bovine bone.
Variations in grain, tone, painting, surface texture, and finish are expected and are part of the character of every set.
Photography and individual screen settings may also cause colors to appear slightly different from the physical product.
Production quantities are limited by suitable material availability and the time required for hand craftsmanship.
Made slowly. Painted by hand. Meant to last for generations.
