How Senjoy Designs an Original American Mahjong Collection

An original Mahjong set needs more than a new picture on each tile. For us, it starts with a point of view that can carry through an entire game.

One idea, a whole set

We think about the Dots, Bams, Craks, Winds, Dragons, Flowers, and Jokers as parts of the same visual world. The shapes and colors should feel connected across the collection, but each tile still has a job to do: players need to recognize it quickly at the table.

In Geometric Bloom, circles, lines, leaves, and architectural forms build a modern graphic language. In Cobalt Garden, botanical illustration and porcelain-inspired blue create a very different mood. Both show how a theme can guide a complete set instead of becoming a collection of unrelated decorations.

Beauty has to work in play

American Mahjong depends on readable numbers, letters, and familiar tile categories. We consider contrast and symbol clarity alongside illustration. Our goal is a set that rewards a closer look without slowing down the game.

Material is part of the design

Color is not limited to the tile face. Acrylic layers, backs, edges, and finish all affect how a set looks when tiles are stacked and how it feels when they are handled. A collection works best when artwork and material choices support the same idea.
