American vs. Chinese Mahjong Sets: A First-Time Buyer’s Guide

Choosing your first Mahjong set? Start with the game your group plays. American Mahjong and Chinese Mahjong share familiar tile families, but their rules and equipment requirements are different. A set can be beautiful and still be the wrong fit for your table.

Ask which version your group plays

“Chinese Mahjong” can mean several styles with different rules. American Mahjong commonly uses Jokers and a hand card that lists the combinations players can make. Ask your teacher or playing group which rules and card they use before buying a set.

Check the tile inventory, not just the total

A count such as 160 tiles is useful, but it does not explain exactly which tiles are included. Compare the Dots, Bams, Craks, Winds, Dragons, Flowers, Jokers, and spare tiles with your group’s requirements. Extra tiles are not necessarily used in every game.

Also check whether the current hand card is included or purchased separately. A set described as “American Mahjong” does not automatically include every accessory your group may use.

Compare tile size and accessories

Read the product page for tile dimensions and what comes in the box. Racks, pushers, dice, a bag, and a playing mat may be included or sold separately. If you already own racks, confirm the tiles will fit them. Ask the seller when a detail is unclear.

Then choose a design you love

Once the practical details are clear, explore colors and artwork. Senjoy’s original American Mahjong sets range from the coastal color of Serene Tide to the vivid graphics of Pop Love and the botanical blue of Cobalt Garden. Review each product’s current tile breakdown and included accessories before ordering.

Your first-set checklist

  • Confirm your group’s Mahjong rules and hand card.
  • Compare the full tile inventory with those rules.
  • Check tile size and any racks you plan to use.
  • Review included accessories and what is sold separately.
  • Choose artwork you will enjoy bringing to the table.

The best first set fits the game you are learning and makes you excited to play again. If you are planning a set for your club or group, learn about our custom American Mahjong projects.
